Why We Shoot 16mm Film at Third Wave Films
All of our productions are shot on motion picture film. Long considered the gold standard for documentary image acquisition, 16mm film provides superior depth of field, contrast ratio, and color saturation to all but the highest end digital cameras. We feel many digital video images evoke a modern "newsy" look, while motion picture film speaks to another time and place.
"Our images must resonate history...transport the viewer into the story"
Tom Garber

The Eclair ACL and Bolex H16 are work horses at Third Wave Films. We use an impressive quiver of lenses for both cameras.

The
Eclair ACL is lighter and smaller than most sync-sound 16mm cameras,
making it perfect for filming aboard boats.
Tom Garber shoots all of the 16mm scenes for Third Wave Films' documentaries.

This camera gets around. Looking West from the Bayonne Bridge.

We use Sony Digital DVCam for all the interviews.

We even film digital photos in 16mm to give them an older feel.
